How environmentally friendly is the lithium-ion battery?

Advocating a green, environmentally friendly and low-carbon lifestyle has always been the goal of my country's economic and social development. Especially in recent years, under the promotion of many favorable policies such as national dual carbon, the new energy battery market that conforms to the concept of green development has developed rapidly. Under this circumstance, lithium-ion batteries have emerged in various fields, so what is the environmental protection of lithium-ion batteries?

First, lithium-ion batteries are more in line with my country's new energy green development requirements. Lead-acid batteries contain lead compounds, which will seriously pollute the environment once leaked. Lead-acid batteries contain heavy metals such as mercury, lead, cadmium, and nickel, as well as electrolyte solutions such as acids and alkalis, which are harmful to the human body and the ecological environment to varying degrees. The production route of lithium-ion batteries has always advocated green and environmental protection, and is more environmentally friendly in terms of recycling and utilization, and is more in line with the national green development requirements for new energy.

Second, the chemical raw materials used in lithium-ion batteries include lithium iron phosphate, lithium nickel cobalt manganate, lithium nickel cobalt aluminate, graphite, etc. Among them, lithium iron phosphate basically does not contain heavy metals or volatiles and other components, and it is easy to be recycled and processed into batteries. It has less impact on the environment and can be called an environmentally friendly battery.

Third, lithium-ion batteries have four key materials, namely positive electrode, negative electrode, separator, and electrolyte. Among them, LiPF6 is the most widely used electrolyte in commercial lithium-ion batteries. It has good electrical conductivity and electrochemical stability, and is discarded. The battery has excellent characteristics such as simple handling and relatively little impact on the ecological environment. Therefore, compared with conventional batteries, lithium-ion batteries have good environmental friendliness.
