Researchers at Stanford University have devised a new way to make lithium-ion battery packs last longer and reduce degradation caused by rapid charging.

The research, published Nov. 5 in IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology, shows how actively managing the amount of electricity flowing to each cell in a pack, rather than delivering the charge evenly, can minimize wear and tear.

According to Stanford professor and senior research author Simona Onori, preliminary simulations show that cells managed with the new technique can handle at least 20 percent of charge and discharge cycles, even with frequent rapid charging, which puts additional stress on the cells.
