Thanks to advancements in the world's largest electric vehicle market, lithium-ion batteries may soon power China's massive fleet of conventional submarines, according to a Chinese Navy research published on October 29 by the South China Morning Post (SCMP).
China doesn't just want lithium batteries for its submarines. The Japanese Navy was the first to use it in 2018, adding manganese metal to the submarine's lithium battery in an effort to boost safety but at the price of performance. In 2021, South Korea launched a submarine fueled by lithium and nickel and cobalt.
